Description

(54) PORTABLE STAND FOR USE IN STUDYING (71) I, ARMANDO REYES VALLEJO, of No. 12 C. Brion Street, San Pablo City, Philippines, of Filipino nationality do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a portable stand for use in reading and writing, and for accommodating various educational materials which may be needed by one who would want to study comfortably, to be sitting on a chair, or sofa or lying on a bed.
Ordinarily, writing and reading is done on a table or desk while sitting on a chair. The writer places the paper in front of him and writes with the side of the paper at an angle with the edge of the desk in front of him.
With the paper in this position, the writer, when he wants to read, has to place the book further to his front with the lower edge of the book very near or touching the upper corner of the paper. He reads while the book is tilted at an angle that is most convenient to his eyesight. This tilting process is achieved by any of the following methods: (a) by resting the upper end of the book on another book or on a book rest, (b) by holding the book with his hands. Due to the natural configuration of the desk and chair, the process of writing and reading is done with the writer's or reader's body in stooping position, elbows at the edge of the desk and his back away from the backrest of the chair. For long periods of time, this process may cause discomfort and backache.
The present invention provides a stand for studying materials comprising a free standing post having a plurality of radially extending arms at spaced locations along the post, each arm being pivotable about the axis of the post and having a support surface pivotally mounted on the arm, one or more of the arms comprising an inner section pivoted on the post and an outer section on which a support surface for reading matter is pivotally mounted to enable reading matter to be supported at a desired angle, the outer section being movable relative to the inner section.
One of the advantages of this invention is that an assembly for use in writing and reading is provided which would render the performance of said acts comfortable thus eliminating backaches even in prolonged periods since the user could rest his back comfortably on the backrest of his seat, be it a chair, sofa or a bed.
Another advantage of this invention is that an assembly for use in reading and writing is provided which is compact, light and portable and could therefore be used conveniently in offices, homes, schools, hospitals and out of doors.
Still another advantage of this invention is that an assembly for reading and writing is provided which requires minimum space and which is also easy to assemble and disassemble and which may also be used effectively with a stool, bench, chair, sofa or bed.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a desk assembly showing the relationship of the various parts; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the lamp; Figure 3 shows how the bookrack is accommodated by a supporting arm of the assembly.
Referring now to the drawings, the desk assembly for use in studying includes a horizontally disposed stable base member 1 provided with rollers 2 and a lug 3 to receive a post assembly 4.
The post assembly 4 is provided with a stabilizing plate 5 secured to the accommodating lug 3 by a key 6. Post assembly 4 consists of a hollow lower section 7 having a longitudinal slot 8 with several spaced-apart notches 9. Inside the fixed hollow lower section 7 is adjustably inserted a solid upper post section 10 which has a lug 11 which fits into any one of the notches 9. Thus, the upper post section 10 may be extended or shortened with respect to the lower section 7 if so desired.
Pivotally disposed at the base of the post assembly 4 is a bookrack 15. Bookrack 15 is secured to the post assembly 4 by a support arm 12 whose inner end is provided with a sleeve 13 pivoted on the post 4 while the outer end is provided with a tubular sleeve 14 (Figure 3) in which pin 17, provided at the bottom of the bookrack, is pivotally received. A box 16 is provided on said bookrack 15 to accommodate notebooks, papers and the like.
Upward of the bookrack 15 is a utility tray 18 whose outer bottom edge is reinforced by circumferentially disposed lugs 19 with screws 20. Pin 21 provided at the midunderside portion of the utility tray is secured by a plate 22 and screws 23. Utility tray 18 is pivotally secured to the post assembly 4 by a support arm 24 whose inner end is provided with a sleeve 25 pivoted on the post 4 while the outer end is provided with a tubular sleeve 26 to accommodate pivotally the pin 21 of the utility tray, enablin the tray to rotate.
Disposed above the utility tray 18, separated by a tubular spacer 27, is a writing board 28. The writing board 28 is rotatably secured to the post assembly 4 by a supporting arm 29 consisting of an inner arm section 30, a connecting section 31 and an outer arm section 32. The inner arm section is provided at one end with a sleeve 33 pivoted on the post 4 while the outer ends are pierced. The connecting section 31 is pivotally connected to the pierced ends of the inner arm section 30 through its sleeve 34 and are held together by a pin 35 and wing nut 36. The connecting section 31 is further provided on its mid-portion with a raised bracket 37 provided with an adjustable wing bolt 38.Secured to the other end of the connecting section 31 by a twoheaded pin 39 is the outer arm section 32 whose extended portion 40 positioned extending through the connecting section 31 may be borne upon by the adjustable wing bolt 38 to tilt the writing board with respect to a horizontal axis. The outer arm section 32 has a sleeved end 41 through which the pin 43 of the universal joint 42 of the writing board support 28 is secured by a wing nut 44. A pair of adjustable stays 45 is provided on the sides of the writing board support 28 to hold down a portable typewriter or the like. The adjustable stays 45 are secured through stay holders 46 provided with wing screws 47.The stay holders 46 are sec- ured to extension rods 48 passing through rod holders 49 secured at the back of the writing board 28 and provided with wing screws 50, and sleeve nuts 51 which are likewise secured at the back of the writing board.
With the above construction and connections, the writing board is angularly adjustable about both vertical and horizontal axes, which with the inward, outward, rotational and tiltable adjustments of the arm, provides an infinite number of positions to which the board may be adjusted.
Near the top of the post are the two similar reading boards 52a and 52b. Each of said reading boards 52a and 52b is mounted by means of a universal joint on a support arm 53 comprising three sections similar to the support arm 29 of the writing board 28 except that the sleeved ends 54 are pivotally connected to a pair of vertically spaced flanges 55 by pins 56 and nuts 57. The flanges 55 are secured to a tubular sleeve 58 which is keyed to the post 4 by a key 59 and separated from the writing board by a tubular spacer 60. The outer sections of the arms 53 are angularly movable with respect to the inner sections, the arrangement being similar to that for the writing board support 28.
The reading boards 52a and 52b are provided with U-shaped brackets 61 and bottom lips 62 to assist in holding a book on the board and to keep the book open. The U-shaped brackets 61 are secured to the side ears 63 of the reading boards by bracket holders 64 provided with wing screws 65. The opposed legs of the brackets 61 are provided with tightly wound coil springs 66 and locking thumbscrews 67 to enable the brackets 61 to be biased toward the lips 62 or upwards towards the upper edge when they are being used as rulers in underlining passages in the books.
An ac-dc goose-necked lamp 68 may be secured to one of the reading boards 52a and 52b by an attaching means 69 locked by a thumb screw 70 at the back of the reading board. A battery pack 71 attachable to the back of any of the writing board is also provided for the lamp.
Rotatably secured at the top of the post 4, separated by a tubular spacer 72 from the reading boards 52a and 52b, is a center piece 73 which is provided with a pin 74 at the bottom, this being rotatably received in the spacer 72. The center piece 73 has a horizontally disposed portion 75 on which an ash tray or the like may be placed, and an upstanding portion 76 provided with appropriately placed aperture 77 and holders 78 to receive pins, pencils, cigarettes, matches, and any other items needed by the user of the device.
Various modifications may be made in the invention without departing from the scope thereof as defined in the appended claims.
