Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN MOTOR CYCLE DISPLAY INSTRUMENT HOLDERS (71) We, VDO ADOLF SCHINDLING AG, of 103, Grafstrasse, Frankfurt/Main, Germany, a Body Corporate, organised according to the laws of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:- The present invention relates to motor cycle display instrument holder, having an instrument-dashboard-like carrier and an oscillation damping ring which is resilient, surrounds each display instrument and is secured to the carrier.
For the resilient mounting of display instruments in switching or instrument panels, a device is already known which comprises a rubber-elastic ring surrounding the display instrument housing and having a groove extending over its periphery for insertion of the ring into a corresponding recess in the instrument panel and at least one metal ring co-operating with the securing means for the measurement instrument and bearing at the rear ring-side.
The rubber-elastic ring has a cross-section which, save for the groove, is circular or rectangular. These devices have the disadvantage that on securing the display instrument in the instrument panel with a conventional means-generally a bracket both ends of which bear on the metal ring and which is secured by means of knurled-headed screws to the indicator instrument housing, so that the display instrument is pressed with its front ring against the dashboard or the rubber-elastic ring the rubber-elastic ring is compressed and due to the elasticity of the connection between the display instrument and the dashboard is disadvantageously influenced.
In another known device, this disadvantage is eliminated in that a ring having a cross-section which is U-shaped and open towards the display instrument housing is provided and therein there is arranged a rigid counter-bearing ring extending between the inner faces of the ring sides. Such an arrangement has the disadvantage that it is extremely costly to manufacture.
It is an object of the present invention to overcome partially or wholly the above mentioned disadvantages by providing a holder for a display instrument which has a construction involving the minimum number of components and exhibiting good oscillation damping over a large frequency range.
According to the present invention there is provided a motorcycle display instrument holder having a dashboard-like carrier and a resilient, oscillation-damping ring for surrounding each display instrument when secured, wherein the ring and the carrier are integrally formed from plastics material.
In the case of such a holder, the ring is manufactured in the same working step in which the carrier is manufactured, and is shaped thereon.
Consequently, a holder is produced which involves only small manufacturing costs.
Preferably, the ring has an S-shaped crosssection and is provided at its abutment face adjacent the display instrument with a bearing shoulder for a front ring of the display instrument. The fixing of the display instrument at the ring is effected in the conventional manner, for example, by means of a bow the two ends of which bear directly or indirectly on the ring and which is pushed on to a threaded port arranged on the housing rear side and retained with a knurled nut screwed thereon.
Since the ring and the carrier are integrally formed in a plastics material, it is possible to manufacture inexpensively the entire holder in an injection moulding process. A further improvement of oscillation damping can be achieved in that the plastics material is a hard-rubber-like resilient plastics material, for example, from a cross-linkable polyurethane. It has been found to be especially expedient to manufacture the unit from a half-hard polyurethane foam material. This affords optimum damping properties.
The present invention will now be described in greater detail by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein the sole figure is a cross sectional view of one preferred form of motorcycle display instrument holder.
Referring to the drawing, the holder comprises a carrier I designed for fixing on the head-lamp housing of a motorcycle, and an oscillation-damping ring 2, which constitute a one-piece unit of half-hard polyurethane foam material.
The ring 2 has an S-shaped cross-section.
At its bearing face 4 adjacent to a display instrument 3 it is provided with a shoulder 5 at which a front ring 6 of the display instrument 3 bears.
Fixing of the display instrument 3 in the holder is effected by means of a bow 7 the limbs 8 of which bear via a metal ring 9 on the ring 2, and two knurled nuts 10 which are screwed on to threaded pins 11 rivetted to the housing of the display instrument 3.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. A motorcycle display instrument holder having a dashboard-like carrier and a resilient, oscillation-damping ring for surrounding each display instrument when secured, wherein the ring and the carrier are integrally formed from plastics material.
2. A holder according to Claim 1, wherein the ring has an S-shaped crosssection and is provided at its bearing face adjacent to the display instrument with a bearing shoulder for the front ring of the display instrument.
3. A holder according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein said plastics material is a hardrubber-like resilient plastics material.
4. A holder according to Claim 1 or 2, wherein said plastics material is a half-hard polyurethane foam material.
5. A motorcycle having at least one display instrument housed in a holder constructed in accordance with any one of the preceding claims.
6. A motorcycle display instrument holder constructed and arranged substantially as herein described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing.
