Description
(54) WASTE TRAP
(71) We, SIMON GAYER and GRAHAM
TAYLOR, both British subjects, both of 110,
Gleneagle Road, Streatham, London, S.W.16, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a waste trap for use with or as an integral part of shower base trays, baths, sinks and other sanitary appliances, including waste water gullies.
The waste pipe leading from for example a conventional domestic sink which connects it to the drain normally includes an S- or
P-trap containing a column of water for stopping the passage of foul gasses from the drains and also for collecting waste matter which passed through the sink outlet. This waste matter may be removed, should the trap become totally or partially blocked, by
removing the parts provided for such an eventuality. However, such parts of the trap are often positioned on the underside of the sanitary appliance and below the column of water generally in places where access is limited and the waste removal operation is consequently difficult.
The present invention provides a waste trap comprising a sump to be fitted immediately below a sanitary appliance outlet, wherein the sump is cylindrical and is a single integral unit defined by an outer wall and an inner wall, and by a bottom wall between the inner and outer walls, the sump being generally symmetrical about the central vertical axis thereof, a cylindrical vertical baffle disposed between the inner and outer sump walls and surrounding the inner sump wall, the bottom edge of the baffle being spaced from the bottom wall of the sump and the baffle extending over the greater part of the height of the sump, and a cover extending across the top of the baffle, the cover and the baffle being integral and removable together to allow access to the sump for removal of accumulated waste.
The inner wall of the sump preferably defines an integral outlet pipe which may be attached to a suitable waste pipe. In use water flows through that part of the appliance outlet which is not closed by the cover into the outer part of the sump between the outer sump wall and the baffle, around the bottom of the baffle, up through the inner part of the sump between the inner sump wall and the baffle, and finally down out through the outlet pipe which is preferably defined by the sump inner wall.
If undesirable waste matter passes through the sump it will sink to the bottom thereof to be trapped in the portion at the bottom of the sump. By removing the cover and the baffle the sump may be cleaned of waste matter from above the appliance outlet below which it is situated.
In use the sump contains a column of water which is held between the outer wall which is generally connected to the sanitary appliance and the inner wall which forms the trap outlet and which terminates below the level of the sanitary appliance outlet.
The cover is integral with the baffi,e so that they may be imperivous to the passage of gases in the portion of the baffle and cover which enclose the outlet of the trap below and above the water level.
The cover of the baffle may also be a part of the appliance outlet having suitable apertures for the passage of waste water externally of the baffle and into the sump, the cover and the baffle being removable to allow access to the water column for removal of accumulated waste.
Any foul gases coming up from the drain through the outlet of the trap wil be restrained from passing into the appliance by the portion of the cover and baffle enclosing the outlet and the column of water separating the appliance outlet and the trap outlet.
The invention will be further described, by way of example only, with referenec to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a schematic side view through one embodiment of a waste trap according to the invention
Figure 2 is a plan view of the waste trap shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 1 of another embodiment of a waste trap according to the invention.
In the drawings, like reference numerals indicate like parts.
The waste trap shown in Figures 1 and
2 comprises a cylindrical sump 4 which is
a single integral unit defined by an outer
wall 5 and an inner wall 6, the wall 6 defin
ing an outlet pipe of the trap, and by a bottom wall 11 between the inner and outer
walls. A cylindrical vertical baffle 1 is dis
posed between the inner and outer sump walls, the bottom edge la of the baffle being
spaced from the bottom wall 11 of the sump.
A cover 2 extends across the top of the
sump and is integral with the baffle 1, the
cover having a series of apertures 3 there
in. The cover 2 locks in a suitable manner
into the rim of the sump 4. The rim of the
outlet pipe defined by the wall 6 is level or
splayed as indicated by reference numeral 9.
The trap may be securely fixed to the
sanitary appliance in which it is situated
by means of a compression ring 7 screwed on
a thread 8 integral with the sump 4 and
spaced from the appliance by a gasket 10.
The apertures 3 in trap cover 2 may be
closable by a suitable cap or plug (not
shown). The trap cover 2 and sump 4 may
be constructed of any suitable metal or plastics material.
In use waste water flows through the
apertures 3 into that part of the sump be
tween the wall 5 and the baffle 1, around
the bottom of the baffle, up between the
sump inner wall 6 and the baffle, and finally
down out through the outlet pipe defined
by the wall 6. Any undesirable waste matter
which accumulates at the bottom of the
sump may be cleaned out after removing the
cover 2 and integral baffle 1.
The waste trap shown in Figure 3 is very
similar to that shown in Figures 1 and 2
except that apertures 3 are disposed in a
stepped part 2a of the cover 2. The cover
2 may then suitably accomodate a plug 12.
In addition a circlip 13 provided between the top of the cover 2 and the appliance outlet enables removal of the cover and integral baffle.
It will be appreciated that the sump 4 may be made integral with the appliance in which it is fitted, if so desired.
The sump may be provided with an overflow inlet, as indicated schematically in broken lines by reference numeral 14 in
Figure 3.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A waste trap comprising a sump to be fitted immediately below a sanitary appliance outlet, wherein the sump is cylindrical and is a single integral unit defined by an outer wall and an inner wall, and by a bottom wall between the inner and outer walls, the sump being generally symmetrical about the central vertical axis thereof, a cylindrical vertical baffle disposed between the inner and outer sump walls and surrounding the inner sump wall, the bottom edge of the baffle being spaced from the bottom wall of the sump and the baffle extending over the greater part of the height of the sump, and a cover extending across the top of the baffle, the cover and the baffle being integral and removable together to allow access to the sump for removal of accumulated waste.
2. A waste trap as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the inner wall of the sump defines an integral outlet pipe.
3. A waste trap as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, wherein the cover extends across the top of the sump and has one or more apertures therein for the passage of liquid into the sump.
4. A waste trap substantially as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, Figures 1 and 2 or Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
