India-rubber, preparation of.-Apparatus for carrying out the process for dehydrating described in the parent Specification comprises a pin-plate l fitted with a relatively small number of pins l<1> capable of reciprocating vertically, synchronously with a step-by-step horizontal motion of a tray n carrying the mass of rubber to be perforated. A shaft a driven through a clutch e operated through links g, g<1>, g<3> carries an eccentric h by means of which pins l<1> are caused to reciprocate through a stripping-plate l<2> to pierce and compress a layer of rubber in a perforated tray n capable of sliding in a casting m formed with a drain m<1>. The tray n is moved forward by means of pawls o engaging racks n<2>, on each side of the tray. Each pawl o is mounted on a bell-crank lever o<1> on a spindle o<2> on which is also mounted an arm o<3> carrying a bolt o<5>. On the up-stroke when the pins l<1> are withdrawn from the rubber, a bracket o<4> on the pin-plate l comes in contact with nuts on the bolt o<5>, and further movement feeds the pawls o forward. The pawls are returned on the down-stroke by a spring p. To ensure the machine stopping with the pins withdrawn from the rubber on releasing the clutch, a slightly eccentric disc s is mounted on the shaft a, and bears at its farthest out point on a wooden brake s<2>.
