Description

(54) FLAT GASKET OF IMPREGNATED MATERIAL (71) We, GOETZE A.G., formerly known as Goetzewerke Friedrich Goetze existing under the laws of the Federal Republic of Germany, of Burgermeister Schmidt-Strasse 17, 5093 Burscheid 1, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The present invention relates to manufacture of a flat gasket, such as a cylinder head gasket, comprising at least one layer of compressible material having its sealing surface impregnated with an impregnating agent, the gasket having a through opening bounded by an enclosing flange of sheet metal.
Cylinder head gaskets of compressible material, such as asbestos, which may incorporate a metallic reinforcing plate, have their sealing surfaces impregnated in order to increase the strength and fluid-tighmess of the gasket.
In the case of cylinder head gaskets of compressible material for modern highly loaded engines, however, it is important that the compressible material possesses a relatively high yield point in those zones which are subjected to most stress by the applied sealing pressure, and these are the areas around the combustion chamber openings.
This is achieved by keeping these zones free from impregnating agent and thus in practice cylinder head gaskets according to German Laid-open Patent Specification 2 304 505 which are free from impregnating agents in the zone below the bordering flanges are in use.
These cylinder head gaskets are produced in a particularly simple manner in that the gaskets, which are pre-punched and provided with bordering flanges and consist of a layer of asbestos fibre reinforced with metal if necessary, are treated with the appropriate impregnating agent by rolling-on, immersion or spraying. In this relatively simple method, however, it may happen over and over again that impregnating agent is able to get below the bordering flange and, consequently, a relatively high number of rejected cylinder head gaskets with too low a yield point in the zone Ibelow the bordering flanges is produced in manufacture.
In accordance with the present invention there is provided a method of making a flat gasket comprising at least one layer of compressible material having its surface impregnated with an impregnating agent, the gasket having a through opening bounded by an enclosing flange of sheet metal, wherein the junction between the flange and the exposed surface of the compressible material is covered by a thin continuous protective coating such that the impregnating agent applied to the surface in a liquid state is prevented from penetrating into the compressible material enclosed by the flange.
In fact, it has been found on analysis of the problem in question that after the openings have been enclosed and the subsequent levelling of the flanges, the metal flange plates may spring up, so that a gap is formed between the end of the side of the flange and the surrounding layer of soft material.
The impregnating agent then penetrates through this gap into the zones below the bordering flanges to an increased extent during the following impregnating operation and cylinder head gaskets with enclosing plates which have sprung up in this way no longer possess the required high yield points and would become rejects. The gap possibly occurring as a result of the flange plate springing up is covered by the protective coating applied according to the invention and any inward flow of the impregnating agent is prevented. The entire surface of the metal flange may be covered. The adjacent layer of compressible material is coated at the most up to a width of 3 mm, so that on the one hand good anchorage of the coating and on the other hand as complete impregnation as possible of the remaining surface zones are still obtained. So that the coating does not break as a result of the stresses occurring on the flange plate springing up it is advantageous to make the coating of elastic material, preferably, therefore, rubber. The coating is therefore preferably produced from silicone rubber applied in a thin film by the screen printing method, the silicone rubber having at the same time a good resistance to the impregnating agent which can be used. As in German Laid-open Patent Specification 2 304 505, completely poly merisable organic synthetic substances are preferably employed as impregnating agents.
The drawing is a section through the edge of a cylinder head gasket adjacent the combustion chamber, the gasket having a metal flange plate which has sprung up.
The gasket consists of a metal plate 3 covered with asbestos sheets 1,2. The edge of the gasket is enclosed by a flange 4 which has sprung up, so that a gap 5 has been created between the ends 6 of the sides of the flange and the adjacent layer of asbestos 7. A protective coating 8 consisting of silicone rubber about 0.1 mm thick covers approximately 4 mm of the margins 6 of the flange and the surface of the adjacent layer of asbestos 7 for a distance of 1 mm. The impregnating agent 9 has filled the pores of the remaining surface zones of the layer 10, penetrating to a depth of about one third of the thickness from each face of the gasket. The impregnating agent has also penetrated under the coating 8 up to a boundary 11 short of the edges of the margins 6 of the flange, so that the material enclosed by the flange 4 is free from the impregnating agent 9.
WIlAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A method of making a flat gasket comprising at least one layer of compressible material having its surface impregnated with an impregnating agent, the gasket having a through opening bounded by an enclosing flange of sheet metal, wherein the junction between the flange and the exposed surface of the compressible material is covered by a thin continuous protective coating such that the impregnating agent applied to the surface in a liquid state is prevented from penetrating into the compressible material enclosed by the flange.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1 in which the coating extends over the surface of the compressible material to a width of no more than 3 mm.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2 in which the coating is 0.1 to 0.3 mm thick and of elastic material.
4. A method as claimed in claim 3 in which the coating is of natural or synthetic rubber.
5. A method as claimed in claim 4 in which the coating is of silicone rubber.
6. A method as claimed in any of the preceding claims in which the impregnating agent is a synthetic organic polymer which is elastic or plastic in the fully-polymerised condition.
