Description

(54) ELECTRICAL CONTACT PANELS (71) We, HALEY & WELLER LIMITED, a British Company of Wilne, Draycott, Derbyshire do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us and the method by which it is to be performed be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to electrical contact panels.
According to one aspect of the present invention an electrical contact panel comprises a plurality of superposed layers including a first and second sheet of electrical conducting material, said first and second sheet having sandwiched therebetween a layer of low melting electrical conducting material and an apertured layer of electrically insulating material, the arrangement being such that the first and second layers of electrical conducting material are normally electrically insulated from one another but the application of heat to the panel will cause the low melting material to flow and to connect electrically the first and second sheets via the apertures in the apertured layer.
The plurality of layers may be held together to form a panel by means of adhesive bonding, or alternatively clamps or bolts may be employed, provided that any such clamps or bolts do not form an electrical circuit between the first and second electrical conducting layers. Bolts or clamps of insulating material may be used or alternatively insulated sleeves may be employed.
The layer of low melting electrical conducting material should preferably have a melting point below about 80"C. In order to avoid climatic problems it is also preferable that the melting point should be above 40"C.
The layer may comprise a suitable metal alloy but any other material may be employed provided that it has a suitable melting point and is a satisfactory conductor of electricity in the molten state.
The layer of electrically insulating material may, for example, be a plastics material and to this end both a polyethylene film and pvc film have been found to be suitable. It is of course important that the layer of insulating material should have a melting point higher than that of the layer of low melting material.
Conveniently, the layer of insulating material has a thickness of about 0.2mm and is provided with a plurality of perforations which may, for example, be of 2 mm. diameter occurring at a frequency over the surface of from 3 to 5 holes per square centimetre.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawing which is a schematic cross section from a part of a panel according to the invention.
The panel comprises a first layer of electrical conducting material 1 and a second sheet of electrical conducting material 4. Interposed between these is a layer of low melting metal alloy 2 and a perforated sheet of insulating plastics material 3 having perforations 5. Electrical connecting elements are connected to the sheets 1 and 4.
In use the electrical connections connected to sheets 1 and 4 are included in an electrical circuit of a security device such as an audible or visible alarm. If an attempt is made to drill, cut, or otherwise sever the panel an electrical connection will be made between the electrical conducting sheets 1 and 4 and actuation of the security device will occur. Similarly, any application of heat to the panel will cause the low melting material to flow through the perforations in the insulating layer thereby making an electrical connection between the sheets 1 and 4, again serving to actuate a security device.
The panels of the invention have a number of potential applications, for example, they can be applied to the inside of a security door so that any application of a cutting tool or cutting torch to the door would cause the panel to conduct electricity. The use of a panel in this manner has the advantage of course that an alarm can be energised at a remote situation without their being any local indication that the energisation has taken place. The panel can also be used in conjunction with a thief deterrent device such as a pyrotechnic smoke generator.
The panels also have industrial applications, for example, monitoring the temperatures of manufacturing processes, identifying the "blow-back" of boilers in heating installations and the detection of overheating in mechanical equipment.
A further application is an an initiator, for example, of pyrotechnical devices whereby the use of such a panel in conjunction with a suitable striker mechanism could be used to control the firing of a pyrotechnic device such as a marine distress signal.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS: 1. An electrical contact panel comprising a plurality of superposed layers including a first and second sheet of electrical conducting material, said first and second sheet having sandwiched therebetween a layer of low melting electrical conducting material and an apertured layer of electrically insulating material, the arrangement being such that the first and second layers of electrical conducting material are electrically insulated from one another but the application of heat to the panel will cause the low melting material to flow and to connect electrically the first and second sheets via the apertures in the apertured layer.

3. A contact panel according to claim 1 in which the layers are held together by clamps or bolts.
4. A contact panel according to claim 3 in which the clamps or bolts are of insulating material.
5. A contact panel according to claim 3 in which the clamps or bolts are provided with an insulated surface.
