Description
(54) A PROTECTIVE HOOD FOR ATT ACHMENT TO A HAND TOOL
MACHINE, ESPECIALLY AN ELECTRIC HAND TOOL
(71) We, ROBERT BOSCH G.m.b.H., a
German company, of Postfach 50, 7000
Stuttgart 1, Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a protective hood for attachment to a hand tool machine, such as an electric hand tool, for example an angle grinder.
With one such prior protective hood, resonances occurring during operation of the tool to which it is attached, are so strong that they may cause the protective hood to disintegrate.
The protective hood in accordance with the invention comprises a tubular section forming a fixing union, a fan-like section extending outwardly from the tubular section and terminating in a part-cylindrical rim section, radially and/or circumferentially extending ribs being formed in the fan-like section.
The ribs provide a form of damping which completely overcomes, or at least considerably reduces, resonances which would otherwise occur.
Preferably, the ribs are in the form of embossing and when extending circumferentially, are continuous.
The ribs need not extend over the entire fan-like section but only over a substantial portion thereof.
The reduction in resonances may be further improved by arranging a damping element, such as a rubber insert, in the bore of the tubular union section.
In the preferred form of hood, the fanlike section is part-conical, that is to say it forms part of a cone.
In order that the invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect, two protective hoods in accordance therewith will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figures 1 and 2 are sectional and plan views respectively of a protective hood provided with radially extending ribs in accordance with the invention; and
Figures 3 and 4 are sectional and plan views respectively of a protective hood provided with circumferentially extending ribs in accordance with the invention.
The protective hoods shown in Figures 1 to 4 are made of sheet steel. They each comprise a short tubular section 10 forming a union by means of which the hood can be attached to a hand tool such as an angle grinder, a fan-like part-conical section 11 in the form of a semicircular arc extending outwardly from the tubular section 10 and terminating in a part-cylindrical reinforcing rim section 12. The section 11 is partconical in the sense that it forms part of a cone.
The hood shown in Figures 1 and 2 has a plurality of radially extending embossings 13 formed in the part-conical section 11, the ribs extending over only a substantial portion of the section 11, in this instance their length extending over only a substantial portion, in this case two-thirds of the radius of the part-conical section.
The protective hood is attached to a hand tool by means of a pipe clip (not shown).
Thus, in contrast to the effect of a smooth surface in the part-conical section 11, a substantial reduction in the resonance of the protective hood is produced in that section. In addition, a resilient insert 15, for example a rubber sleeve, can also be arranged in the bore 14 of the tubular union section 10 to provide a damping element further reducing the resonance of the hood.
The hood shown in Figures 3 and 4 has embossings formed as circumferentially extending ribs 17 and 10. In all other re sects, this hood is the same as that of
Figures 1 and 2.
If desired, both the resonance-reducing ribs shown in Figures 1 and 2 and those shown in Figures 3 and 4 can be combined.
In that event, the ribs 13 may interconnect the ribs 17 and 18.
Finally, the ribs 13 and/or 17 and 18 need not extend over the entire fan-like part-conical section of the hood but only over a substantial portion thereof.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A protective hood for attachment to a hand tool, comprising a tubular section forming a fixing union, a fan-like section extending outwardly from the tubular section and terminating in a part-cylindrical rim section, radially and/or circumferentially extending ribs being formed in the fan-like section.
2. A protective hood according to claim 1, in which the ribs are in the form of embossings.
3. A protective hood according to claim 1 or claim 2, in which the ribs extend over only a substantial portion of the fan-like section.
4. A protective hood according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the ribs extend circumferentially and are continuous.
5. A protective hood according to any one of claims 1 to 3, in which the ribs are radial and extend over only a substantial portion of the radius of the fan-like section.
6. A protective hood according to any preceding claim, made from sheet steel.
7. A protective hood according to any preceding claim, in which a damping element, such as a rubber insert, is arranged in the bore of the tubular union section.
8. A protective hood according to any preceding claim, in which the fan-like section is part-conical.
9. A protective hood according to any preceding claim, in which circumferentially extending ribs are interconnected by radially extending ribs.
10. A protective hood for attachment to a hand tool substantially as herein described with reference to Figures 1 and 2 or Figures 3 and 4 of the accompanying drawmgs. - -
