Description
(54) CORROSION-INHIBITING COMPOSITIONS
(71) We, WITCO CHEMICAL CORPORATION, a Corporation organised and existing under the laws of the State of Delaware, United States of America, of 277 Park Avenue,
New York, State of New York, 10017, United States of America, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
The present invention relates to novel corrosion-inhibiting compositions having improved corrosion- or rust-inhibiting properties. The compositions with which the present invention is concerned are of the type which contain, as an essential component, thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal, especially calcium, sulfonates, which can be used in the form of high viscosity greases, or in the form of solutions in nonvolatile or volatile solvents or carriers, such as nonvolatile petroleum oils or volatile organic solvents such as hexane, octane or mineral spirits, or mixtures of such nonvolatile and volatile organic solvents.
Thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate products having corrosion-inhibiting properties, and having utility for a variety of uses such as, for example, in automobile and truck body undercoatings, and in slushing oils, are known and are disclosed in, for example, U.S. Patents Nos 3,565,672; 3,661,622; 3.746,643 and 3,816,310.
The present invention, in its broadest aspects, is based upon the use of thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate-carbonate complexes. The thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal, particularly calcium, sulfonate-carbonate complexes which are, however, particularly satisfactorily for use in the present invention are those produced following the procedures disclosed in U.S. Patents Nos 3,565,672 and 3,816,310.
We have discovered that substantial improvement in the corrosion- or rust-inhibiting properties of thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal, especially calcium, sulfonate-carbonate complexes is obtained by incorporating oxidized petrolatums thereinto or admixing them therewith.
According to the present invention there is provided a corrosion-inhibiting composition comprising a thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate-carbonate complex and an oxidized petrolatum, the proportion of the oxidized petrolatum being in an amount substantially to enhance the corrosion-inhibiting properties imparted to said composition by said thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonatecarbonate complex.
The compositions of the present invention are particularly useful as protective coatings in the form of thin films, i.e. 0.1 to 0.5 mils, on metal surfaces, particularly ferrous metal surfaces, such as iron and steel surfaces. It will be understood, of course, that the compositions of the present invention may be used as coatings of greater thicknesses as, for example, of the order of 5 or 6 mils or more. The exact manner in which the oxidized petrolatums function in these compositions is not known, but there appears to be a synergistic action between the thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate-carbonate complexes and the oxidized petrolatums.
The proportions of the oxidized petrolatums utilized pursuant to the present invention may be varied within wide limits. In general, to obtain reasonably appeciable enhancement of the corrosion- or rust-inhibiting properties of the aforesaid greaselike overbased products, the finished greaselike overbased products should contain at least 10 wt.% of the oxidized petrolatums. The amount thereof may, however, range up to about 50 wt.%.
Commonly, however, when the amount exceeds 25 to 35 wt.%, there is a decrease from an optimum enhancement of corrosion- or rust-inhibiting effects. Furthermore, the extent of such enhancement tends to vary somewhat depending upon the particular thixotropic greaselike alkaline earth metal sulfonate-carbonate complexes and the particular oxidized petrolatum employed. In general, in many, if not in the majority of cases, the preferred amount of the oxidized petrolatums is within the range of 10 to 30 wt.% of the aforesaid greaselike overbased products.
Oxidized petrolatums and various procedures for the preparation thereof are known per se and various of them are articles of commerce. Illustrative are those sold by ALOX
Corporation under ALOX Numbers 100D, 102, 600 and 601. Oxidized petrolatums where the extent of oxidation is such as to provide acid numbers in the range of from 10 to 130 are most suitable. Oxidized petrolatums having acid numbers in the range of 15 to 75 being particularly preferred.
The thixotropic greaselike overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate-carbonate complexes which are used in the preparation of the corrosion-inhibiting compositions of the present invention are conveniently initially prepared in the form of concentrates. These concentrates may comprise, for example, dispersions of an inorganic-organic complex in a nonvolatile or volatile organic solvent, which commonly is a petroleum oil or mixture of petroleum oils, or which comprises a mixture of a volatile organic solvent and petroleum oil, with or without other materals as additives, an example of which is microcrystalline wax. The amount of microcrystalline wax incorporated in the compositions of the invention may be in the range of from 5 to 30% by weight, preferably 10 to 20% by weight. When the alkaline earth metal of the sulfonate-carbonate complexes is calcium, the inorganic-organic complex comprises calcium carbonate and calcium sulfonates. Concentrates of the foregoing type are, per se, well known to the art and have been marketed commercially for a number of years under such trade designations as "SACI" 100, "SACI" 200, "SACI" 300 and "SACI" 700, for use as corrosion- or rust-inhibitors or as additives for admixture with diluents in the form of aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated hydrocarbons or mixtures thereof for application in thin films particularly to ferrous metal surfaces to provide for protection of these surfaces against corrosion or rust. Such "SACI" products may be prepared by known processes particularly those disclosed in U.S. Patent
No 3,816,310.The aforesaid commercially marketed "SACI" concentrate products made in accordance with the teaching of U.S. Patent No 3,816, 310 may further be described as follows in terms of typical physical and chemical properties thereof:

It may be noted that the addition of the oxidized petrolatums increases the viscosities of
the greaselike compositions to which they are added. In such cases where viscosity control is
desired, this can readily be effected by adding organic solvents in the requisite amounts to
obtain any particular viscosity which may be sought.
The thixotropic greaselike overbased products, when used as coatings for metal surfaces
can be applied to the metal surfaces in various ways such as in the manner disclosed in the
U.S. Patent No 3,565,672.
The following Table shows the results of tests made by coating mild steel panels with illustrative thixotropic greaselike overbased calcium sulfonate compositions (designated as "Material") with and without additions of oxidized petrolatum, allowing the panels to dry, and then testing them in a salt fog cabinet (ASTM B-117), the observations being made using a 0.2 mil coating thickness:
