Abstract

This binding strap consists mainly of a strap-shaped plastic part (2) having a locking head (1) at one end. The strap-shaped part (2) has blocking teeth (3) and can be passed through an opening (5) in the locking head (1) in which it can be clamped tightly for the purpose of holding together and/or fixing electric leads, cables or pipes. For this purpose, the locking head (1) is fitted with a pawl (6, 9) which is pivotable and bears blocking teeth (8) which can engage in the blocking teeth (3) of the strap-shaped part (2). Such a construction improves the function of the locking head (1). <IMAGE>

Description

(54) A BINDING STRAP (71) We, TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M.
ERICSSON, a company organised under the laws of Sweden, of S-126 25 Stockholm, Sweden, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: - This invention relates to a binding strap, for example one for being fastened around and to long objects such as bundles of electrical conductors, cables and pipes.
According to this invention there is provided a binding strap comprising a length of flexible material provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth, a through-hole and a pawl, which strap can be fastened around and to an object by passing a free end portion of the length of flexible material through the hole so that the strap extends around the object, and pulling this portion so that the strap is fastened around and to the object with the pawl engaging in the teeth, in which strap the pawl is mounted pivotally so as to comprise a two-armed lever, part of the pawl on one side of its pivot engaging in the teeth and a part of the pawl on the other side of its pivot bearing against the strap when the strap has been so fastened around and to an object, pulling the free end portion in this condition resulting in the second-mentioned part of the pawl being displaced so that the first-mentioned part of the pawl is pressed more tightly into engagement in the teeth.
The invention will now be described more by way of example with reference to the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which in side view partly in cross-section shows a binding strap which is fastened around and to a not-shown object.
In the figure, a locking head of a binding strap is designated 1 and is shown in section, being integral with a length of flexible material 2 the outside of which is provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth 3 of which only those have been drawn which are closest to a free end portion 4 of the strap.
The free end portion 4 has been pulled through a through-hole in the locking head so that the strap extends around a notshown object. The through-hole has an input opening 5 which is on the inner side of the strap. Inside the hole there is a pawl 6 which comprises a two-armed lever which is fastened at its middle 7 and is able- to pivot around the fastening point. The part 9 of the pawl extending from the fastening at the middle 7 towards part of the length 2 is pressed outwards by the strap on tightening around the object by pulling portion 4, and the pawl pivots around its fastening at the middle 7 in the direction of the arrow A. The part of the pawl which extends from the pivot fastening on the other side from part 9 (and which is provided with ratchet teeth 8) is then pressed into engagement in the teeth 3, which becomes greater the more the strap is tightened.
The pawl 6 is, at the pivotal fastening at its middle 7, moulded together with the locking head but the resilience of the material allows the necessary turning movement of the pawl, the whole strap being moulded from flexible plastics material. In the example, it is not necessary to provide, during fabrication, a pawl having the necessary resilience for a complete engagement between the teeth of the pawl and the teeth into which they engage. Also, the risk that the pawl will slip away and loosen its grip upon harder loads is substantially eliminated, because the harder the strap is tightened, the harder the grip.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:- 1. A binding strap comprising a length of flexible material provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth, a through-hole and a pawl, which strap can be fastened around and to an object by passing a free end portion of the length of flexible material through the hole so that the strap extends around the object, and pulling this portion so that the strap is fastened around and to the object with the pawl engaging in the
