Description
(54) A FOLDING STOOL AND BAG
(71) I, GEORGE LAPSEY HONES a
British Subject of 3, Carbone Hill, Cuffley,
Herts, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to a device which can be used as both a bag and a seat.
A folding device in accordance with the invention comprises a bag, two pivotally interconnected frame members and a flexible seat member connecting upper portions of the frame members, the arrangement being such that the frame members may be folded together with the seat member depending therefrom or opened out so that the seat member is substantially taut and forms a stool, the bag being supported by the frame members so as to hang therefrom between the members both when the frame members are opened out, and when the members are folded together. The device is useful in a variety of situations, providing a convenient means of both carrying goods and providing a seat, and may be used to advantage by, for example, plumbers or other repairment, fishermen, commuters, picnickers, etc.
The frame is preferably in the form of two intersecting rectangular, or square, frame members which are pivotally attached to each other at the points of intersection. The flexible seat portion, which connects the upper portions of the frame members, may take the form of a piece of strong, material, such as leather. The frame is collapsed by moving together the upper portions of the frame member.
The bag may be of a standard form, made of flexible material, such as canvas, and having, for example, zips to provide access to the interior of the container, and it is preferably attached at the top to the frame via the seat portion, from which, in use, the bag depends.
Preferably, when the device is used as a seat, the bag does not touch the ground, so it does not become dirty or wet. It is also advantageous to have a seat portion which is solely supported by the frame, and not at all by the bag, so that no weight is applied to the bag, thus avoiding the risk of crushing the contents of the bag, and also ensuring, when the bag is flexible, that the device may be used as a seat even when the bag is empty. When the frame is collapsed, the device may be picked up by the frame, and, for this purpose, there may be provided two cut-out parts in the seat portion adjacent to the sides of the frame where the seat portion is attached to allow the frame to be gripped here and thus form a handle.
In order to prevent the bag from inconveniently swinging about when the device is carried, there may be provided a pair of straps, or other attachments, to hold the sides of the bag to the frame.
The invention will now be further described with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device in accordance with the invention when adapted to provide a seat Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device of Figure 1, with the frame in its collapsed position.
Referring to Figure 1, a device 2 incor- porates a frame 4, a bag 6, and a seat portion 8.
The frame 4 is constructed of two substantially square structures 10 and 12, made of, for example, tubular metal, e.g. aluminium, which are pivotally hinged together at two points of intersection, one of which is indicated at 14.
The bag 6 has a pocket 16 and zips 18 provide access to the interior of the container. The top 20 of the bag 6 is attached, by sewing, to an elongate central section 22 of the seat portion 8. Two straps, one of which is indicated at 24, are attached to the bag 6, and extend around the intersection of structures 10 and 12.
The seat portion 8 is attached to the frame 4 by sewing the ends of the portion 8 around sides 26 and 28 of structures 10 and 12 respectively. Cut-out parts are provided in seat portion 8 so that the frame may be gripped by sides 26 and 28. The thus exposed portions of these sides may be covered with suitable material to provide a good grip.
It will be appreciated that the device as shown in Figure 1 is capable of being used as a seat, the frame 4 providing the necessary rigidity and stability, and can also be used for storing goods in bag 6. The bag in this position is held with its bottom spaced above the ground.
Referring now to Figure 2, the frame 4 is shown in its collapsed position. The device 2 may then be carried conveniently, by means of a handle formed by portions of sides 26 and 28, the cut-out parts of the seat enabling these sides to be gripped more easily. Strap 24, and the corresponding strap on the other side, prevent bag 6 from swinging when the device 2 is carried by holding the bag 6 to the frame 4.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A foldable device comprising a bag, two pivotally interconnected frame members and a flexible seat member connecting upper portions of the frame members, the arrangement being such that the frame members may be folded together with the seat member depending therefrom or opened out so that the seat member is substantially taut and forms a stool, the bag being supported by the frame members so as to hang therefrom between the members both when the frame members are opened out, and when the members are folded together.
2. A foldable device as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the bag is attached to the seat member.
3. A foldable device as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein a pair of opposed sides of the bag are held relatively to the frame members by straps extending around the pivotal connections of the frame members.
4. A foldable device as claimed in Claim 1 or 2 wherein the seat member has a cutout part adjacent to each of its connections to the upper portions of the frame members, so that when the frame members are folded access is provided so that the upper portions of the frame members may be gripped.
5. A foldable device as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4 wherein the dimensions of the bag are such that, when the device is used as a stool, the bottom of the bag is spaced from the ground.
6. A foldable device substantially as herein described with reference to the drawings accompanying the Provisional Specification.
