Abstract

The hydrophilic polycarbonate membrane is used for preferential removal of molecules of moderate molecular weight from the blood. The polycarbonate preferably comprises a polyether-polycarbonate block polymer containing 5-35% by weight of recurring alkylene ether carbonate units and 95-65% by weight of bisphenol A carbonate units. The membrane exhibits improved transport properties for molecules of moderate molecular weight and approximately the same ultrafiltration rate as cellulose membranes. Patients treated in dialysers using the polycarbonate membranes exhibited improved haemocritical and neurophatic functions.
