Abstract

1439482 Making hinges CROMPTON NETTLEFOLD STENMAN Ltd 30 Jan 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 6716/73 Heading B3A A method of making a hinge comprises blanking the hinge parts from a strip of ferrous metal which has been coated on both surfaces with a metal which is more electro-positive than the ferrous metal, shaping the blanks into hinge parts and assembling the parts into a hinge. The blanks are stamped from zinc coated mild steel or other ferrous strip material. They are shaped by rolling knuckles on them and are then broached to true up the knuckle ends. The parts are assembled with the knuckle bores in alignment and a ferrous pivot pin is inserted in the bores. Since the coating metal is more electro-positive than the ferrous metal, the uncoated edges of the hinge parts are protected as the coating metal corrodes preferentially to the ferrous metal.
