Abstract
1439271 Purification of chlorinated hydrocarbons IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 25 March 1974 [26 March 1973 (2)] 14343/73 and 14344/73 Heading C2C A chlorinated hydrocarbon contaminated with one or more bromohydrocarbons, optionally also chloro-substituted, is purified by contacting with a solution of an ionizable chloride in a solvent medium comprising water and/or a dipolar aprotic solvent in which the contaminated chlorinated hydrocarbon is at least partially soluble and subsequently separating the desired product. The ionizable chloride is preferably HC1, ammonium chloride or an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or rare earth metal chloride, particularly NaCl. At least a stoichiometric amount of the chloride is added required to replace the Br content of the bromohydrocarbon but not more than 50 moles per mole of impurity. If HCl is used it is present in 5-35 wt. per cent and if ammonium or metal chlorides are used they are present in at least 5 wt. per cent. A quaternary ammonium salt may also be present in 0.01-10% by weight of the chlorinated hydrocarbon, e.g. tetra-heptyl ammonium chloride. In the examples 1,1,2- trichloroethane and perchloroethylene containing 1 -bromo-2-chloroethane contaminant are purified.
