1439243 Charging coke ovens SIMON-CARVES Ltd 1 Aug 1973 [4 Aug 1972] 36586/73 Heading F4B Charging apparatus for a battery of horizontal coke ovens having sealable top charge holes arranged in rows over the length of the battery, comprises fixed coal storage bins 18 and equipment for feeding coal to the bins are spaced above the oven roof, and hoppers 39 travelling longitudinally of the battery between the bins 18 and the roof and having top inlets which can be placed below sealable outlets of bins and lowerable charging pipes to form a dust-tight connection with the oven charge holes. An individual bin 18 is provided for each row of charge holes for a number of adjacent ovens, and the hoppers 39 are of such form that the charging pipe 49 can engage the extreme holes of each group while the hopper receives coal from the associated bin. Coal is supplied to the bins 18 by scraper conveyers running in trunking 28, and the bins 18 are supported on a framework carried by extended buckstays 11 of the battery through load cells 17. The outlet 20 of each bin 18 extends into an exhaust gas collector duct 33, and is closed by a valve 59. Each hopper 39 is supported by wheels 42, 43 running on rails secured to the exhaust duct, and when in position, the hopper 39 is raised on one set of wheels 42 so that the other wheels 43 engage guides 37 on the exhaust duct wall and a seal 41 engages the bottom of the duct 33, while doors 35, Fig. 5, in the duct on either side of the bin outlet 20 are opened by projections 58. The charging pipe 49 is extended to engage the charge hole of the coke oven, and the door 59 opened to allow coke to be charged. Each hopper 39 has an oven door opener 52 below a roof 51, and a vibrator to facilitate flow of coal. The arrangement enables an oven from each group to be charged at the same time, and the hoppers can be positioned over the charge hole of the next oven of the group to be charged before the oven lids are opened. The bins can be charged as convenient, the weighing cells enabling the amount of coal fed to each oven to be controlled.
