1437979 Non-uniform stretching of films HOECHST AG 24 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972] 40184/73 Heading B5B The cross-section of thermoplastics film webs is varied by heating the web non-uniformly prior to and optionally during longitudinal stretching, and varying the non-uniformity so that the temperature distribution across the web changes with time, the temperature differences in the web causing non-uniform stretching of the film. The heating may be effected by several infra-red radiators each of which can be separately controlled to obtain the desired effect, or by a single heater separated from the web by a perforated plate which is moved transversely across the web, thereby moving the heat "shadow" and thus zones of no, or little heating to and fro across the web. Further stretching may be effected prior to or after the above process after which the web may be thermofixed. Preferred films for use in the process are those of polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene and polyamides. See also Specification 1,437,980.
