Abstract

1437758 Propellants ROCKWELL INTERNATIONAL CORP 8 Oct 1974 43501/74 Heading C1D Particles of solid propellant containing a cellulose or cellulose derivative binder are inhibited by coating with a reaction product of a polyfunctional isocyanate and a polyol. Preferably polymethylene polyphenyl isocyanate, polyethylene glycol, and dibutyl tin dilaurate as a catalyst are dissolved in methylene dichloride, applied to the propellant particles, and cured by heating. Other isocyanates referred to are triphenylmethane triisocyanate, toluene diisocyanate, hexamethylene diisocyanate, lysine diisocyanate, and isophorone diisocyanate, other polyols are polypropylene glycol and hydroxyterminated polyesters and polybutadienes, and other catalysts are cupic and ferric acetonyl acetonates. The isocyanate cross-links the polyol to the hydroxyl groups of the cellulose binder. Examples are given of propellant compositions which include as ingredients nitrocellulose, HMX, dinitrodiphenylamine, dinitrotoluene, polyethylene glycol, graphite, ethyl alcohol, and water.
