Abstract

1437578 Drying granular materials H BAUDOT 16 April 1974 [10 May 1973] 16460/74 Heading F4G A process for drying granular materials in a vertical column 20 through which the materials pass by gravity consists of a multiplicity of successive cycles, each cycle comprising a first phase in which dry air under pressure is caused to pass transversely through a quantity of the material in the vertical column 20 and a second phase in which air is passed through the column at a rate less than in the first phase and a limited quantity of material is allowed to flow out of the bottom of the column 20. The second phase may be followed by a third phase which in duration lies between the first and second phase durations in which the material consolidates within the column and the rate at which air passes through the column is substantially the same as in the second phase. The rate at which air passes through the column 20 is controlled by a valve 6 which comprises at least two pivotally mounted rectangular shutters (Fig. 2, not shown) operable by a ram and linkage to move between an open condition to a closed condition, in which latter gaps are provided between the shutters and about their peripheries. The shutters are closed simultaneously with the opening of a discharge valve 26. Cooling air is blown into the base of the column through a further shutter valve arrangement 12 (particular construction, Fig. 4, not shown). Air passing through the column then passes through a filter 31.
