Abstract
1437330 Curtain coating method ILFORD Ltd 26 Sept 1973 [18 Oct 1972] 48036/72 Heading D1L A method of curtain coating a travelling web uses a curtain coating apparatus comprising a horizontally disposed, elongated coating hopper into which coating liquid is supplied and from which it is distributed onto the surface to be coated as a free-falling vertical curtain through a porous region in the hopper which is coextensive with the length of the curtain. The hopper may be formed from porous polyethylene tubing (Fig. 1, not shown) or polyethylene tubing which has a porous region only along its lower surface [Fig. 2, not shown]. Alternatively the hopper may be formed as a conventional extrusion hopper from, e.g. steel, with the die slit thereof filled with a porous material, e.g. sintered glass, [Fig. 3, not shown]. For multi layer curtain coating a single hopper 60 [Fig. 6] may be provided with a divider 62 which divides the distribution chamber 61 into sub compartments 65 and 66. The lower region of the tube 60 is formed by two porous areas 63 and 64 which produce side-by-side layers of coating material 67, and 68. Alternatively a plurality of porous tubes 30. 34 and 38 (Fig. 4) may be mounted one above the other and slightly offset to produce a three layer curtain of coating liquid.
