Abstract

1437285 Cam followers FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 29 April 1974 [15 May 1973] 18588/74 Heading F2K [Also in Division F1] An I.C. engine comprises a poppet valve having a stem reciprocably mounted in the cylinder head, a fulcrum member mounted to the cylinder head, a rocker arm connected at one end to the fulcrum member and engageable at the other end with the poppet valve, and a cam-shaft engageable with the rocker arm between the two ends, oil passing from an outlet in the fulcrum member to an inlet in the rocker arm and thence via a passage in the rocker arm to an outlet adjacent the cam-shaft. Oil under pressure passes via a duct 35, Fig. 1, to a fulcrum member, e.g. which may be a threaded stud, or as shown, an hydraulic lash adjuster, and thence via an outlet 33 in the spherical end 31 of the fulcrum member and an inlet 49 in the socket 39 of the rocker arm 37 to a passage 53 within the rocker arm. The passage 53 terminates in an enlarged portion forming a reservoir 55, from which the oil is discharged through an outlet 51 immediately beneath the engaged portion of the cam surface 45. A check valve may be provided to prevent oil from siphoning back from the rocker arm to the fulcrum member when the engine is stationary. The inlet 49 is sufficiently high in relation to the reservoir 55 to ensure that the latter retains a substantial quantity of oil when the engine is stationary. When the engine is re-started, oil in the reservoir 55 is immediately splashed or vibrated through the outlet 51 to provide immediate lubrication of the engaging surfaces of the cam and rocker arm before the oil begins to be pumped. The rocker arm 37 is a casting with a plug 57 to close the reservoir 55. The rocker arm may instead be formed from a pair of channelsection stampings 61, 63, Figs. 3 and 4, welded together, the space between the stamping defining a passage 79 which connects the inlet 62 to the outlet 77 and acts also as a reservoir.
