Abstract
1437125 Measuring borehole inclination and tilt electrically: borehole clinometers APPLIED TECHNOLOGIES ASSOCIATES 15 Aug 1973 38610/73 Headings G1F and GIN Apparatus 12 for determining azimuth and tilt of a borehole or well comprises a rate of turn gyroscope 20 producing an output which varies as a function of azimuth orientation of the gyro relative to the earth's spin axis. The gyroscope includes a rotor having a spin axis (SRA) and means to support the gyro for travel along a borehole or well and to rotate it about a further axis extending generally in the direction of the borehole or well, the tilt of the hole also being determined by an accelerometer 26 arranged for rotation with the gyroscope 20 about axis 24 parallel to the longitudinal axis of the housing 18 of the apparatus. As seen in Fig. 3 the rotation of the gyro about axis 24 causes its signal output 39a to be a maximum when the spin reference axis SRA passes through the North- South longitudinal plane and to be zero when that axis is normal to that plane. The accelerometer output 45 is maximum when the gyro output indicates South or North alignment. Further the accelerometer output is greater when the tilt angle increases and vice-versa.
