Abstract

1436474 Gauging INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 June 1974 [23 Aug 1973] 27149/74 Heading B3B [Also in Division G3] In a numerical control system for a machine tool, the force/deflection characteristics of the machine tool-cutting tool combination are calibrated by translating tool support 41, Fig. 3B, by a predetermined distance #Y while its end abuts a deflection testing surface A, the increase in force F 2 -F 1 being sensed by devices 33, Fig. 1. The distance #Y is determined from a tool position at which either a circuit is closed indicating contact of tool and surface A, or a predetermined bias force F 1 is measured. The corresponding position of the tool support is assessed relative to an expected position, itself related to estimated tool diameter, to determine actual tool diameter, which may change due to wear. The calibration data is used in the execution of a part programme providing adaptive control signals to the machine tool, sensors 33 and tool spindle tacho (70), Fig. 8C (not shown) providing actual force and speed data. If the program is to be executed to a given cutting tolerance, the calibration data is processed to indicate a corresponding maximum allowable cutting force, which is fed to the process control computer 50 along with the part program from disc store 10. A library of deflection characteristics for a number of tools may be established, as may a library of part programmes each with an index whereby an operator may call it up. The processed calibration data controls the feedrate in accordance with the desired tolerance. The programme itself has maximum feedrate data although, for air gaps in the machining, the actual feedrate may be allowed to exceed this. A part programme data processing computer (9), Fig. 5 (not shown) may be used to prepare programmes for storage on magnetic tape (80) having access, along with the disc store, to the process control computer. Software embodiments of the calibration, and part, programmes are described in detail, hardware embodiments also being mentioned. A tool can be calibrated while other tools attached to the machine tool are cutting parts. The tool may be a milling cutter.
