Abstract

1435788 Seismic energy generators GEOSOURCE Inc 19 Oct 1973 48921/73 Heading H4D A method for generating an underwater seismic pulse having a signature with a primaryto-secondary pulse pressure ratio of at least eight-to-one comprises spacing a plurality of bubble-generating seismic energy sources of different sizes apart sufficiently to prevent coalescence of their initially expanding bubbles of correspondingly different maximum diameters, actuating the sources simultaneously, and suppressing secondary oscillations of the bubble of at least one source. In one embodiment, seven air guns of different chamber volumes and mutually spaced at various intervals are supported by floats and towed by a ship. Each gun has two compressedair chambers connected by an orifice, one chamber serving to inject oscillation-suppressing air into the bubble generated by abrupt release of air from the other chamber. Delays been a firing control signal for the guns and their actual firing times are compensated for by electronic means, the delays for individual guns being measured with the aid of respective hydrophones placed near the guns. The guns may be replaced with explosive or other seismic sources. Bubble oscillation may be suppressed by other gas-injection techniques or by using a perforated enclosure for the seismic source.
