Abstract

1435488 Fibrous polymer particles BP CHEMICALS INTERNATIONAL Ltd 23 July 1973 [1 Aug 1972] 35903/72 Heading B5B [Also in Division D2] Fibrous polymer particles are made by subjecting a flow of a crystallizable polymer to a fluid stream to produce an elongational stress in the solution and allowing the polymer to crystallize while subjected to the elongational stress and to form fibrous polymer particles. Preferred polymers are high density polyethylene and polypropylene, and specified solvents include cyclohexane, n-hexane, n- .heptane, n-pentane, isopentane, xylenes, benzene, toluene, methylene dichloride, methyl chloride and mixtures thereof. A 1 to 15% by weight solution of high density polyethylene in xylene or cyclohexane is preferred, having a solution viscosity of 10<SP>2</SP> to 10<SP>4</SP> poise, and which may contain fillers, pigments, surface-active agents, anti-statics, or other paper-making additives, and the rate of flow of the solution may be 0À5 m. to 200 m./sec. The fluid stream may be nitrogen, carbon dioxide, or steam, water or superheated water, and may impinge on the polymer at an angle not greater than 30 degrees. Thus it may be directed at the flow of solution 3 as the latter emerges from a nozzle 5 mounted coaxially inside a nozzle 10 carrying the fluid -stream. Suitably the fluid stream is at a temperature of 20‹ to 160‹ C., and its rate of flow at least 10 times the rate of flow of polymer solution when a gas is used and at least 3 times when a liquid is used. Particles so made may be of length 1 to 10 mm., with an average degree of crystallinity of at least 10%, preferably 25 to 100%. The fibrous polymer particles may be deposited in the form of a sheet, e.g. by laying down on a mesh grid under gravity or by their own inertia, or the fibres may be used to make an aqueous pulp from which sheets are formed on conventional paper-making machinery. In apparatus as shown in Fig. 2, the fibrous polymer particles are collected on a gauze and provision is made for recovery of the solvent.
