Abstract

1435318 Polymeric containers AMERICAN CAN CO 25 April 1973 [28 April 1972] 19530/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] Containers for containing a pressurized product have a substantially transparent sidewall formed from a molecularly oriented polymeric material comprising a component containing moieties derived from a conjugated diene monomer, and a component containing moieties derived from an α,#-olefinically unsaturated mononitrile of formula CH 2 = CR CN in which R is hydrogen or an alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms or a halogen, the sidewall having an average circumferential orientation release stress of 500-2500 p.s.i. The nitrile component may also include an ester of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid. The nitrile is preferably acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile ; the ester is preferably methyl or ethyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate and the conjugated diene monomer is preferably butadiene or isoprene. The container may be formed by blow-moulding by extruding a tube, the bottom end of which may be closed by pinching, swaging, compression moulding, &c. immediately after extrusion or on reheating, the other, open, neck and thereof being formed by compression moulding or by blow-moulding, immediately after extrusion or on reheating. The extrudate may be cut by the pinching operation and/or in a separate operation. The extrusion may be programmed to provide a variable extrusion rate or dimension, e.g. by a movable core mandrel, mechanical stretching during extrusion or stretching an extrudate of varying axial temperature distribution. The parison may be of non-uniform thickness and/or diameter and may alternatively be produced by injection moulding. Blow-moulding is preferably effected at slightly above the glass transition temperature followed by cooling.
