Abstract
1435250 Wire saws LUMALAMPAN AB 13 Sept 1974 40076/74 Heading B3D [Also in Division D1] In a method of making a wire saw crystals of hard material are deposited on a support wire by heat in a gaseous atmosphere which includes at least one substance which can yield the desired crystals of hard material. The support wire may be formed from tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, osmium and rhenium or alloys of these and the substances providing the hard material which form the layers of crystals on the support wire are provided from borides, nitrides and carbides. In the process of making the saw the wire is heated by passing an electric current through it whilst it is located in a reaction chamber containing a gaseous atmosphere which incorporates the substance providing the hard material, the latter being deposited by thermal decomposition or reduction to form hard crystals on the wire surface well suited to the sawing function. The crystal formation is dependent on the control of the temperature, the nature of the constituents of the gaseous material, the pressure of the gaseous material and the nature of the support wire which controls the rate of diffusion of the crystals formed thereon. The coating of the wire may be carried out in two stages by providing two successive layers of crystals, the first layer inhibiting the crystal growth of the second layer.
