Abstract
1435244 Ceramic seals PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 13 Aug 1974 [16 Aug 1973] 35602/74 Heading B3V [Also in Division H1] An electrical lead-through in the form of a foil is sealed between ceramic parts of a discharge tube as these are joined together by sintering under pressure. The ceramic may be alumina, beryllia or sapphire. In one form, Fig. 2, a lead of Mo foil 15, 16 is secured by the sintering operation, pressure being provided by differential shrinkage during sintering by choosing a highershrinkage material for the tube 10 than the closure 14, or by pre-treatment of one of the parts to give the same result. A central tubular lead-through 13 is subsequently sealed in the closure with glass. The closure may extend inwardly or outwardly of the tube, or may be in the form of a disc applied, over the foil lead, against the end of the tube. In another form, Fig. 4, there are two foil leads 21, 23 for the electrode 18 which has a Mo or insulating support 24. In a further form, a plurality of foil leads is provided by openings 51, 52, Fig. 6, in a cylindrical foil member 50 at least in the part to be sealed. Alternatively, two foil leads may be connected to different electrodes.
