Abstract

1434808 Optical smoke detector ELECTRO SIGNAL LAB Inc 13 Nov 1973 [24 July 1973] 52684/73 Heading G1A An optical smoke detector comprises a base 1 with bottom wall and side wall 3, an optical block assembly 4, supporting lamp 13 and photo-cell 14 with a passage 27, and a passage formed from half passages 29 and (32), Fig. 6 (not shown), along axes A 1 and A 2 to openings in inner side wall 24 and a circuit board 7 slidingly received by guides 48 thus positioning wall 24 opposite wall 3, having ports 44, 46 to define dark chamber 5 whose enclosure is completed by two part cover 8, 9, having an entrance for smoke through opening 64 fitting over block 4 and side wall 3. A single screw through boss 61 secures block assembly 4 and the cover 8, 9 to the base, positioning being determined by depending lips 57. Light pipe 78 extends through holes to the surface of cover 8, 9 to show if the lamp is working. The block assembly 4 has two symmetrical portions, components being held in opposed recesses when the portions are mated by two registering pins and holes. Photocell 16 has at least one diffuser disc 37 and pin hole apertured disc 38 in passage 34. Inner cover 8 with an opening 64, which can be used to introduce a known intensity of light into dark chamber 5, mates with outer cover 9 having curved vanes 68. Circuit board 7 having components of an alarm circuit is secured by inner cover 8. Opposed grooves above and below inner side 24 of the block carry a flexible strip of blackened paper which may be slid over the openings of passages 27, 29 and 32. The decorative housing is formed by an enclosing ring 11 and face plate 12, which has snap fitting spring detents 71, engaging the cover through keyholes (73 in outer cover 9), and 74 engaging terminals 45 mechanically and electrically to supply A.C. to the alarm circuit. Heated resistors 52 cause thermal convection. Circuit board end 49 and baffle 51 form a funnel converging towards zone Z. The main parts are made of moulded plastic.
