Abstract

1434055 Hollow polyacrylonitrile filaments ASAHI KASEI KOGYO. KK 18 April 1973 [28 April 1972 29 Dec 1972] 18642/73 Heading B5B [Also in Divisions B1 and C3] Hollow process fibres are made by dissolving a polymer containing at least 60 mol per cent acrylonitrile units in aqueous nitric acid containing 65 to 95% by weight of nitric acid to give a solution containing 2 to 40% by weight of polymer, and then extruding the solution through a spinneret having a ring orifice into an aqueous coagulation bath containing 0 to 30% by weight of nitric acid at a temperature of 4‹ to 50‹ C., whilst feeding a liquid coagulant into the central portion of the ring orifice. Fig. 2 shows a suitable spinneret nozzle, the spinning solution is fed through tube 7 and the coagulant injected into the fibre via tube 6. The preferred internal coagulant is water. The resulting fibre has a reticulated porous region, the pores being of substantially uniform size, with closed cylindrical or ellipsoidal shaped voids having a diameter in the direction of the short axis of 10 to 50 microns and a long axis pointing towards the fibre axis. The voids are arranged concentrically around the fibre axis and have long axes at least twice the length of the maximum cross-sectional diameter. The diameters of their cross-sections are substantially equal on the same hypothetical cylindrical surfaces having longitudinal axes coincident with the longitudinal axis of the fibre. On either the outside or on both sides of the the porous reticulated layer, and concentric with it, lies a porous layer. The pores here have a gradient in size decreasing from 5 to 1 microns adjacent to the reticulated layer to 0À1 microns to a matter of Angstrom units at the fibre surface.
