Abstract

1433910 Pleating sheet material CHAMBERLAIN PHIPPS Ltd 7 Oct 1974 [12 Oct 1973] 47737/73 Heading D1S Apparatus for pleating a web 2 of sheet material comprises means for feeding the web 2 in its longitudinal direction, means 18, 19 for longitudinally folding the moving web into pleats with the folds extending parallel to the direction of feed, means for severing the folded web at predetermined intervals, and means for folding the severed lengths in a direction transverse to the folds. As shown, the web 2 is unwound from a roll 1 and is folded longitudinally to form pleats by pleating guides 18, 19, Figs. 1 and 2, which progressively interdigitate with each other and are brought progressively closer to each other with the thickness of the material forming the guides being reduced. The pleated web is compressed between rollers 3 and the folded strip 12 passes between gripping members comprising opposed jaws or pads 6 pivoted on arms 5 operated by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder device 4. The strip 12 then passes between a guillotine blade 9 and an anvil 11 operated by pneumatic cylinders 8. The strip 12 is wound around fingers 15, 16 on a drum 14 rotatable by a motor 13, the end of the strip being gripped between fingers 16, 17. In use, the operator grips the end of the pleated strip whilst it is held between the jaws 6 which are then opened, moved towards the rollers 3 and then closed again. The end of the strip is inserted between the fingers 16, 17, the jaws 6 are opened and winding commences. After a predetermined length has been wound, the guillotine 9 is operated, the jaws 6 are closed and the drum 14 is stopped. The jaws 6 are advanced to bring the strip forward for the operator to re-commence the cycle. Each folded length is inserted into an envelope. The sheet material may be a waterproof rescue sheet made of synthetic plastics material having a metallized surface.
