Abstract
1433574 Bis-coumarin derivatives BAYER AG 10 July 1974 [11 July 1973] 30510/74 Heading C2C Novel bis-coumarin derivatives of the formula wherein R 1 is aralkyl, alkyl or aryl; R 2 is hydrogen, cyano, carboxylic acid or ester, carbonamide, acylamino, alkoxy, or R 1 ; or R 1 and R 2 together denote a fused hydroaromatic or aromatic ring; R 3 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl or aryl; R 4 is hydrogen, alkyl or aryl; R 5 is halogen or alkyl; X is a direct bond or a bridge member; n is 0 or 1 and m is 0, 1 or 2, are prepared by either (i) condensing 2 mols of a compound of the formula wherein Z is oxygen or NR 8 ; Y is hydrogen, (C 1 -C 4 ) alkyl or SO 2 R 9 ; R 8 is optionally substituted phenyl; R 9 is phenyl or dialkylamino, with 1 mol of a compound of the formula wherein W is carboxyl or cyano; (ii) triazolyzing a compound of the formula or (iii) oxidately cyclizing a compound of the formula wherein R 1 <SP>1</SP> and R 2 <SP>1</SP> together denote a fused aromatic ring. The novel compounds are useful as optical brightening agents.
