Abstract

1432112 Polyurethane urea dispersions BAYER AG 8 March 1974 [9 March 1973] 10519/74 Heading C3R Polyurethane urea dispersions are continuously produced by continuously introducing an isocyanate prepolymer, a liquid aqueous phase and, optionally, a chain lengthening agent other than water into a zone of high turbulence at a temperature above the melting point and below the decomposition point of the prepolymer and of the chain lengthening agent and continuously removing the resultant dispersion from the zone which consists of a space through which at least 300 parts by volume of liquid are passed per unit volume of space and per hour under conditions of vigorous mixing corresponding to a specific mixing power of from 5 to 25 Watt/cm.<SP>3</SP>. Fine particles of the polyurethane urea may be isolated from the dispersion. The three components may be introduced simultaneously but separately into the zone of turbulence or alternatively the chain lengthening agent and aqueous phase are first mixed and the mixture introduced simultaneously with the prepolymer. The aqueous phase may be water alone or an aqueous emulsifier solution. Rotary homogenization machines are particularly suitable for providing the high turbulence.
