Abstract
1431304 Aluminium solutions; transparent alumina OWENS-ILLINOIS Inc 13 March 1973 [13 March 1972 17 Aug 1972] 12029/73 Heading C1A A clear colloidal solution of aluminium monohydrate is made by (i) reacting one mole Al(OR) 3 where R is C 1-24 alkyl group with at least 8 moles of water and 0À03-0À25 mole of an acid with an ionization constant of at least 1 x 10<SP>-5</SP>, said acid having an anion which does not complex with Al at the concentration -used and (ii) heat treating the slurry thus formed at above 80‹ C. The amount of acid used is preferably 0À03-0À15 mole, in which case the solution may be gelled, e.g. by evaporation or addition of a base such as urea or NH 4 OH, dried, and then pyrolysed at 500-1200‹ C. to obtain transparent alumina with a total porosity of at least 50% volume. Typically the porosity is 63% volume and average radius is 30-150 Š. If the gel is pyrolysed at below 500‹ C. a mixture of alumina and aluminium monohydrate. The transparent alumina may be converted to a Al 2 O 3 by heating at 900-1200‹ C. The alkoxides used are preferably methoxide, ethoxide, propoxide or butoxide and specified acids include HCl, HNO 3 , CH 3 COOH CH 2 Cl COOH, CHCl 2 COOH, CCl 2 COOH and perchloric acid.
