Abstract

1430891 Ionisation detectors CERBERUS AG 17 April 1974 [17 April 1973] 16848/74 Heading H1D An ionization fire sensor 2 has an ionization chamber 10 with an ionizing radiation source 9 and electrodes 8, 11, so that the ion current changes in the presence of fire or smoke. Portions 4, 5 of the housing are separated by an annular slit 13 so formed as to deflect the flow of air through slit 13 to chamber 10 from its direct path. The portion 5 is removable for cleaning. Electrode 11 is an air-pervious grid or mesh preventing access to electrode 8. The sensor 2 is mounted on a portion 1. Air entering slit 13 is baffled by a wall 12 and passes through mesh electrode 11 into chamber 10, where it is ionized by radio-active material 9, e.g. americum 241. Current flowing between electrodes 8, 11 is detected by a circuit 14, which preferably includes an FET input transistor and is connected to an indicator lamp, such as an LED3. Optimum dimensions of the apparatus are given. The housing portions 4, 5 are made of non- conductive material, or preferably are of metal held at a voltage different from that of electrode 11 by a connection 11<SP>1</SP>. In a modification, Fig. 2, not shown, the housing (21) is made in one piece and is connected to a plate (26) so as to leave a substantially continuous annular gap between the parts.
