Abstract

1430287 Making gears; gear cutting LEAR SIEGLER Inc 24 Oct 1973 [20 Dec 1972] 49534/73 Headings B3A and B3K A method of producing hardened gears comprises forming a gear from hardenable steel to approximately its final form, bringing the gear to austenitizing temperature, quenching the gear to a uniform temperature throughout within a temperature range for martempering, shaving the gear at a temperature within the range, and allowing the shaved gear to cool slowly to room temperature. The formed gear is rough machined to approximately its final desired form and after heating to approximately 1550‹ F. is quenched to between 400‹ and 450‹ F in an oil bath or above 450‹ F. in a salt bath and is shaved in a conventional crossed axes gear shaving operation. The shaving cutter used may be maintained at an elevated temperature to eliminate hardening, e.g. at least half the temperature of the gear. The shaved gear may be tempered at 300-350‹ F. and then cooled. The shaving cutter has its teeth formed at a different helix angle from that of the gear, preferably between 3 and 30 degrees. This produces a sliding motion between the contacting surface portions of the gear and cutter which is compounded with involute slide of a conventional shaving operation.
