Abstract

1430020 Tannin-containing coatings on metals PYRENE CHEMICAL SERVICES LTD 19 April 1973 [24 April 1972] 19007/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C7] A method of coating a metallic surface comprises coating the surface with a conversion coating containing zinc or iron, and phosphate ions and subsequently coating the thus-coated surface with a tannin-containing composition. Particular metallic surfaces are of zinc, iron or aluminium, for example cold-rolled, ground, pickled or hot-rolled steel or galvanised steel. The preferred phosphate-containing composition is applied by spraying and consists of 1.5 g/l Zn<SP>++</SP> ions, 6.4 g/l phosphate ions, 0.11 g/l NO 2 <SP>-</SP> ions, 0.5 g/l Ni ions and 0.4 g/l F<SP>-</SP> ions heated to 150‹F. The tannin-containing composition may be applied by spraying or dipping and comprise natural tannin extracts including hydrolisable or condensed tannins or mixtures thereof. Suitable vegetable tannins are extracts of Chinese gall, myrobalon, chestunt wood, divi-divi, valonia, summac, chinchona, mangrove, wattle, eucalyptus, cutch, hemlock, mimosa, oak, gambier, or preferably quebracho. Although not preferred it is stated that the tannin may be stabilised by sulphite treatment. The tannin composition is preferable formulated by diluting a concentrated aqueous composition containing 5 to 60% by wt. of an extract of natural tannin having a molar aromatic/alkyl ratio greater than 2, the composition having a pH greater than 7, and rendering the diluted composition acidic. The phosphated and tannin-treated panels may be further coated with an epoxy primer, an epoxy guide coat and an enamel top-coat.
