Abstract

1430069 Dicarboxylic acid esters IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 28 June 1973 [13 July 1972] 32806/72 Heading C2C Alkane dicarboxylic acids (3-12 C and a B.P. not below 200‹ C. at atmospheric pressure) are esterified with alcohols with a B.P. below 100‹ C. at atmospheric pressure by passing the alcohol liquid or vapour into the liquid acid at a temperature above the B.P. of the alcohol at the prevailing pressure and in the presence of an etherification catalyst, and in which the water vapour and excess alcohol are removed but the volatilized ester is returned to the reaction mixture until the esterification is complete. Succinic, glutaric, adipic, suberic, azelaic, sebacic and dodecanedioic acids are mentioned and the alcohols may be methanol, ethanol, n-propanol and iso-propanol. Examples describe the preparation of methyl esters of technical mixtures of adipic, glutanic acid succinic acids from the oxidation of cyclohexanol or cyclohexanone.
