Abstract
1429309 Fishing rods FIBATUBE LTD 10 April 1973 [20 April 1972] 18487/72 Heading A1A [Also in Division F2] A tube 1a, b, c, of plastics material for a fishing rod is provided with fibrous reinforcements and has additional reinforcement in the form of strands of carbon fibres 2b, a running transversely of the tube axis and incorporated within the tube wall thickness in one or more selected regions along the length of the tube where increased hoop stress is required. In making such a tube a sheet of partly cured reinforced plastics material has an array of cartoon fibres laid transversely across it and is rolled around a mandrel parallel to the longitudinal axis of the sheet to form a tube having at least two laminations with the carbon fibres sandwiched between them; the plastics material is cured and the mandrel removed. The plastics is preferably a phenolic epoxy or polyester resin with glass fibre reinforcement which may be in the form of a glass fibre cloth. The tube may be tapered and used as a fishing rod in which case the tube is cut transversely of its length in the region of the carbon fibre reinforcement, one part of the cut tube then being fittted with a spigot to form a spigot and socket joint with the other part.
