Abstract

1428834 Use of pressure-sensitive adhesive mats for laminating WITCO CHEMICAL Ltd 15 Aug 1974 [29 May 1973] 25576/73 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions D1-D2] Flexible sheet materials are bonded together by bringing them into contact with opposite faces of a substantially dry mat of pressurebonding adhesive filaments and pressing the assembly. The woven, non-woven or knitted nylon, acetate, acrylic or polyester fabrics may be bonded to each other, to polyurethane foam or film, or to polyvinyl chloride film. Examples of two- or three-layer laminates are given, specifying various types of fabric. The adhesive mat may comprise semi-polymerized polyurethane adhesive filaments formed by drying a composition of (a) linear hydroxy-terminated prepolymer of average MW 5000-100,000, (b) an isocyanate comprising 3 or more NCO groups, and (c) optionally, solvent and other additives; specified compositions are given in examples. The mat may weigh 5-15 g./m.<SP>2</SP> and be 0À0025-0À0075 inch thick. As shown, the adhesive composition is fed and doctored at 1 on to a feed surface 2, which is preferably pitted or patterned to facilitate formation of filaments. The surface 2 contacts a faster-moving release-surfaced transfer belt 3, whereby. the adhesive is elongated into filamentary form and entangled with other such filaments to form a mat 4, which is dried (at 50-70‹ C. if necessary) and then bonded to layer 7 between rollers 5, 6 and to layer 11 between rollers 9, 10. Minor modifications of this apparatus are disclosed. The products made by the invention may be used to make clothing, furnishings, inflatable apparatus, slippers, handbags, car trim, trays, beer mats and fancy goods.
