1428331 Coated polyester film TORAY INDUSTRIES INC 7 March 1974 10184/74 Heading B2E [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A coated polyester film comprises a bioxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate or polybutylene terephthalate layer having adhered to at least one surface thereof a uniaxially or biaxially oriented crystalline butylene terephthalate or hexylene terephthalate copolymer which contains 50-80 mol % of terephthalate units based on the total acid component of the copolymer. Other acid components which may be used with terephthalic acid comprise phthalic acid, isophthalic acid and saturated C 6-14 aliphatic dicarboxylic acids. The copolymer may be mixed with 0.005-5% by weight of a polyorgano-siloxane of the formula in which R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 are hydrogen atoms, C 7-20 alkylaryl groups, C 1-20 alkyl groups, phenyl groups or halogenated phenyl groups, n is an integer, x and y are 0 or 1 and x + y = 1, and/or an inert fine powder of an inorganic compound, e.g. talc, magnesium oxide, silicate or carbonate, alumina, calcium oxide, sulphate or carbonate, titanium oxide, silica gel, barium sulphate or phosphoric or phosphorous acid. The copolymer may also contain surface active agents, lubricants, pigments, plasticizers, ultraviolet absorbing agents antistatic agents, crystal nucleating agents, antioxidants and dyestuffs, and may be coated with polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene chloride or a copolymer thereof. The coated polyester film may be produced (a) by contacting a longitudinally oriented PET or PBT film with the molten or solid copolymer, effecting transverse orientation and heat-setting or (b) by contacting a non-oriented PET or PBT film with the molten or solid copolymer, effecting longitudinal and transverse orientation and heat setting. Heat setting may be effected in two stages, first at 180-240C and then at 100-175C.
