Abstract
1428305 Sorting utilizing radiation detectors BORDEN Inc 25 Jan 1974 [26 Jan 1973] 03483/74 Heading G1A Containers are examined with x-rays, and those containing undesired solid bodies are rejected. In Fig. 1 containers 12 are carried on belt 14 to a screw drive 20 which is driven in synchronism with the mains A.C. supply by a motor 22. When a container reaches the region of x-ray source 26 the source is activated by a light source and detector 30, 32; the x-ray source is synchronized with the mains supply so that the container, whose position is determined by the A.C. driven screw, is opposite the x-ray source when emission occurs. After passing through the container the x-rays strike image intensifier 28, producing an image at 29. This is scanned by TV camera 34 and displayed on TV monitor 40 so that any solid body appears as a bright spot. Such a spot is detected by photo-multiplier 44 whose output, suitably delayed, operates a rejector 48. Masks 36, 38, 42 control the various fields of view; further control is possible by processing the signals from the camera 34 so as to display only a part of its field of view at 40, Fig. 2 (not shown). This processing also includes pre-set thresholding so that the sensitivity may be controlled in different parts of the display.
