Abstract

1428151 Regulation of plant growth using formamidines CIBA-GEIGY AG 16 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 12838/73 Heading C1B A process for the abscission, defoliation or desiccation of unlignified parts of plants above the soil comprises applying to the plants at least one compound of Formula I or an addition salt thereof with an inorganic or organic acid; or a quaternary ammonium salt of Formula Ia (wherein R 1 and R 2 each independently represent an alkyl radical having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, an alkenyl radical having 3-5 carbon atoms, or R 1 and R 2 , together with the nitrogen atom to which they are attached, represent a heterocyclic ring system, which optionally contains one or more further hetero atoms as ring members, R 3 represents an alkyl radical having 8 to 14 carbon atoms, R 4 represents an alkyl radical having 1 to 12 carbon atoms, and X<SP>(-)</SP> represents a conjugated ion of a strong acid as herein defined). Typical processes are those wherein the compound applied is N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-di-isopropyl-N<SP>2</SP>- n - dodecyl - formamidine, N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - di - isopropyl- N<SP>2</SP> - n - dodecyl - formamidine - hydrochloride, N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - di - ethyl - N<SP>2</SP> - n - dodecyl - formamidine, or N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP>-di-allyl-N<SP>2</SP>-n-dodecyl-formamidine, and the plants are cotton plants.
