Abstract

1428023 Packaging B R PIKE and W S SCHNEIDER 30 March 1973 [31 March 1972] 15359/73 Heading B8C [Also in Division B5] Form-and-fill packages 36 having a one-way valve passage 26 are made from a major web 20 of laminated film with localized release areas 21 between the laminates, the web being folded longitudinally at 43 and transversely heatsealed at 28, and the valve passage 26 being defined by shaped heat-seals 25 attaching a minor web 23 to one inner wall 42 of web 20. The container 30 so formed is severed from web 20 and filled at 34 and is then closed by sealers 35 forming a top seal 40 which attaches web 23 to the other wall 41 of web 20 and closes the valve passage 26 along seal 46. In use, the top edges of walls 41, 42 are pulled apart to rupture the inner layer of wall 41 along seal 46. A second product, such as a liquid, is now introduced through passage 26, causing the package to bulge and so press the walls of the passage together to form a valve closure. The contents are mixed by kneading and are expelled by tearing off corner 37. In other forms, web 23 is laminated and release areas 21 are formed therein. Again, web 23 may be applied adjacent fold line 43 at which a tear string is attached for opening the package. Another form includes tear strings at each end of the package, to open passage 26 and also to open the mixing compartment. Another form of apparatus attaches web 23 along a horizontal table and then forms the package about a vertical forming and filling mandrel, Fig. 11 (not shown). Instead of a single folded web 20, two separate webs may be sealed together to form the package, as in Fig. 17 (not shown).
