Abstract
1428054 Making commutators; broaching L WORNER 31 May 1974 [6 June 1973] 24191/74 Headings B3A and B3L [Also in Division H2] A method of making a commutator comprises moulding insulating material to a metal cylinder in a mould to form a commutator blank, subdividing the blank to form separate commutator segments and removing material from the segments by an axially directed cutting movement. A shaped copper strip 10 is rolled from flat strip to form a smooth part 11 from which the segments 30 will be made, a stepped part 12, from which tongues 16 project after cutting out webs 14, and ribs 15 extending below the parts 11, 12. The strip 10 is rolled into a hollow cylinder and anchoring elements 24 are cut on the ribs 15. It is then placed in the mould where it is formed into the commutator blank. The portion 11 is next slit longitudinally to form the segments 30, after which the blank is stress relieved by tempering. The commutator blank is then mounted on a mandrel and the segments 30 are shaved by a circular knife 34 having an annular cutting edge 35. The tongues 16, which are not cut during this process, are bent to form hooks (40) for armature wires (41), Fig. 6 (not shown). The wires (41) are secured by bending over the hooks 40 so that they compress the wire, the rounded faces of the hooks preventing damage to the wires. A step (44) may be provided in each segment (30<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 8 (not shown), to accommodate the bent-over hook.
