Abstract
1427771 Outboard motors OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 26 April 1973 [3 May 1972] 19864/73 Heading B7V [Also in Division E2] An outboard motor has a power-assisted linkage actuating a reversing transmission. The motor drive shaft 31 is connected by bevel gears 32, 37, 39 to the propeller shaft 27; a dog clutch 41 engages gear 37 for forward drive and gear 39 for reverse drive. The dog is connected by a member 51 and a thrust bearing 93 to a slotted linkage 67, 57 arranged so that vertical movement of the control rod 53 produces horizontal movement of the dog. The rod 53 is fixed rigidly to a piston 147 of a hydraulic actuator, and by a lost-motion device to a valve spool 127, which is fixed to a handoperated control rod 121. Oil from a pump 179 directly coupled to the bevel gear 37, flows up the hollow control rod 53 and through ports in or body of the piston 147, into a cylinder space 167 or 169, as selected by lands on the valve spool 127. These lands (Fig. 3, not shown), are narrower than the ports they are associated with, so that in the neutral position, both spaces 167, 169 are pressurized. To ensure full engagement of the dog clutch, balls 283, 289 mounted in a slot in the member 51 are spring urged into recesses in a bore of the propeller shaft 27, so holding the clutch in the neutral position until at least a predetermined gearshifting force is applied.
