Abstract

1427295 Measuring gas in foamed oil GES FUER KERNFORSCHUNG mbH 5 June 1974 [5 June 1973] 24923/74 Heading G1A The proportion of gas or air in foamed oils is measured by use of radiation absorption measurement apparatus comprising test and comparison sample chambers 4, 5, the comparison chamber 5 having one of its windows 9 adjustable in position to alter the length of the chamber. A radioactive isotope 17 e.g. Am 241, emitting Y rays, is used to irradiate rotatably adjustable targets of zirconium 20, 21, thereby forming with the resultant fluorescent X-rays two beams 24, 25. A diaphragm arrangement 13 allows only one beam at a time via hole 15 or 14 to one of the chambers 4, 5, which have windows 6, 8 and 7, 9 respectively and input or output apertures for through flow of sample liquid. In operation the test chamber 4 is supplied with the gas-containing oil and the radiation transmitted measured NaI-(Tl) by scintillation crystal 11, coupled to a photo-multiplier. The diaphragm 13 is then switched for irradiation of chamber 5 which is supplied with oil containing no gas. The path length of radiation is adjusted by moving window 9 until the same value is measured by the detector. A marker 36 indicates the percentage foaming on calibrated scale 37. Alternatively a potentiometer may be adjusted for an electrical measurement signal. The test and comparison chambers are contained in a common block of copper 3 so that they are subject to the same temperature conditions. The whole apparatus is housed in metal container.
