Abstract

1426774 Automatic trimming device A M & I LEVELLERS Ltd 18 Sept 1973 43653/73 Heading B7M An automatic trimming device corrects trim of a moving vessel having perpendicular X and Y axes of roll and pitch respectively, the X and Y axes being horizontal when the vessel is in the design attitude, and a mutually perpendicular Z axis. Sensing means of the device responsive to a continued departure from the design attitude includes an unbalanced disc 23 mounted for free rotation about a pivot axis 24 coincident with or parallel to the Z axis. The disc has an opening 35 and is mounted in chamber 20 which contains damping fluid. Forward 31, aft 32 photo-electric cells are in a plane normal to the Y axis, port 34, Fig. 2, not shown, starbaord 33 photo-electric cells are in a plane normal to the X axis and the two planes intersect in the pivot axis. Each photo-electric cell has an electrical output responsive to light rays 35À1 impinging on it when the opening 35 is in line with that particular cell and light source 22. Amplifiers A31-A34 and relays R31-R34, Fig. 4 (not shown), interconnect the sensing means and trim tabs 14.1 and 14.2 to correct the attitude of the vessel. Movement of the tabs each in different directions corrects list to port or list to starbard.
