Abstract

1425978 Underwater foundations HOLLANDSCHE BETON GROEP NV 31 July 1974 [31 July 1973] 36409/73 Heading E1H Underwater foundations are constructed by pouring underwater cement 16 within a cofferdam 1, then pumping the cotterdam dry. A structure, such as a bridge pier, may then be built within the cofferdam, and the cofferdam finally removed. The cement is poured within formwork 10 carried by the cofferdam as shown or constituted by an inclined lower part of the inner wall of the cofferdam (Fig. 8, not shown). The gap between the cofferdam and the formwork is sealed by a solid or inflatable rubber seal 13. The cofferdam has jacks 14 which are used to level it, and which may be retracted so that the weight of the ballasted cofferdam compresses the seal 13. The cofferdam is preferably rectangular in plan, and formed of two or more sections bolted together along vertical joints to facilitate the removal of the cofferdam from the site.
