Abstract

1424801 Purifying waste water AIR PRODUCTS & CHEMICALS Inc and SATEC Ltd 19 Jan 1973 [20 Jan 1972] 2852/72 Heading C1C In a process for purifying waste water, the water is treated to reduce its dissolved nitrogen content and then aerated with oxygen-enriched gas. In Fig. 4 waste water is pretreated in tank 54c with oxygen-enriched gas exhausted from aeration chamber 12c to strip dissolved nitrogen therefrom. The pretreated water is mixed with activated sludge in enclosed aeration chamber 12c and aerated by substantially pure oxygen introduced through inlet 26c. The mixed liquor is further aerated in a chamber open to the atmosphere and then clarified in settler 42c. The activated sludge to be returned to aeration chamber 12c is treated in tank 100c with gas exhausted from chamber 12c to strip nitrogen therefrom. The gas exhausted from chamber 12c may be analysed for its oxygen content by analyser 39c so that gas is exhausted only when the oxygen content thereof is above a predetermined minimum. The tanks 54c + 100c may receive oxygen-enriched gas from any of the subzones of chamber 12c or from another independent source. In another embodiment the gas above the liquid in tank 54c may be withdrawn by a pump and bubbled through the liquid in tank 54c.
