Abstract

1424567 Moulding foamed resin sheet materials; laminates IDEMITSU KOSAN KK 16 July 1973 [17 July 1972 (2)] 33808/73 Heading B5A and B5N [Also in Division C3E] A lightweight foamed sheet 1 having complementary concavoconvex patterns 2, 3 is produced by moulding, under pressure, a sheet of foamed polyethylene resin (defined below) containing at least 30% by weight of an inorganic calcium compound as filler. Compression between appropriately shaped metal male and female moulds may be employed, or vacuum forming assisted by compressed air. In the latter case the sheet will preferably be heated before moulding. The shaped sheets produced may be laminated together to provide a cushion or, as in Fig. 3, used to produce a mattress, by punching holes 14, 15 in the recesses 12, 13, laminating sheets 16, 17 of polyurethane to the sheet 11 using P.V.A. adhesive, and providing an outer cloth covering 18, 19. "Polyethylene resin" includes polyethylenehomopolymer, copolymers having a major proportion of polyethylene, and blends containing a major proportion of polyethylene. The sheet to be moulded may be obtained by cutting a larger moulded block.
