Abstract

1423491 Seaming non-metallic sheet material BIMA MASCHINENFABRIK GmbH 13 April 1973 [26 April 1972] 17826/73 Heading B5K Two sheets of natural or synthetic material, e.g. fabric or leather, are joined by transferring by heat and pressure an adhesive layer 11 from a carrier 10 coated therewith on to the surface of one of the sheets to be joined; laying, after removal of the carrier, the other sheet with part of its surface on the sheet coated with the adhesive; and pressing the sheets together to effect the join. In the apparatus of Figs. 1 and 2, a presser member 2 is movable along an axis X-X by an hydraulic or a pneumatic cylinder 3 towards and away from a work-table 1 which is vertically adjustable on a stand 22. A foot 5 is movable along an axis Y-Y by a cylinder the piston of which carries a holding down part 13 loaded by a spring 14 towards the piston. The end 15 of the part 13 is inclined relative to the body thereof so as to lie normal to the surface 6 of the table 1. Pins 7 are arranged in the surface 6 and are depressible against the action of springs 8. The carrier 10 coated with an adhesive film 11 is guided from a roll 16 via guide rollers 17, 18, 18a beneath the member 2 and the carrier 10 is rewound on a roll 20. The carrier 10 is held taut by resiliently loaded levers 21, 21a acting on the rolls 17, 18. In operation, one sheet (24), Fig. 3 (not shown), is laid on the table so that one edge thereof abuts against the pins (7) and the heated member (2) is lowered to press the carrier (10) downwardly to transfer the film (11) on to the surface of the sheet (24). The member (2) is lifted and is followed by the carrier (10). The foot (5) moves downwardly until its end (15) contacts the sheet (24), Fig. 4 (not shown). A second sheet (25), Fig. 5 (not shown), is positioned so that an edge thereof abuts against the end (15) to overlap the sheet (24) by a distance (27). The heated member (2) is lowered together with the carrier (10) which serves as a heat barrier whilst the sheets are joined. Upon raising the member (2), the carrier (10) is advanced by an increment equal to the overlap distance (27).
